Casuals Live

Vivid Riot and Cass Pennant present a truly unique night dedicated to football casual culture and music. This very special night is headlined by Sheffield’s Section 60. Also on this impressive bill are Stoke’s The Blue Collars, Reading’s Violet Class and Southend’s Plastic Youth. Award Winning author and film director Cass Pennant will compere the evening, whilst DJ Dan Nolan will spin a host of new and old musical classics related to the casual scene.
Casuals Live is the first event of its kind and caters for an audience that is diverse and active when it comes to music, fashion and football culture. The bands on the night mix youthful independent musical passion with mod (ernist) sensibilities, whilst looking very sharp at all times
Praise and hype for the artists featured on the night have reached far and wide. Nick Macabe (The Verve) Produced Plastic Youth’s first single and the band are signed to Gary Powell’s (The Libertines) record label. Violet Class also have impressive plaudits including Stephen Street (producer The Smiths Blur and The Courteneers). The Blue Collars have had mountains of internet press and radio play. Headliners Section 60 can reveal in the fact that they have Reverend and The Makers and Liam Gallagher as fans (The band have been invited to play Gallagher’s Pretty Green store). ITunes described Section 60’s debut album as, “Got to be heard.”
Vivid Riot and Cass Pennant are the perfect combination to host a night of this kind. Vivid Riot has gained mass online popularity with a music blog that reviews, interviews and features the best in new independent music. Their ‘Football Casual Podcasts’ have gained thousands of listeners with a diverse mix of music, making Vivid Riot “The music site that doesn’t f**k about”
Cass Pennant’s name is known worldwide as an author who specializes in football culture writing. Cass has published numerous best-selling books and has also had an eponymous film made about his life which gained critical acclaim. Pennant’s last venture was a documentary called ‘Casuals’ which won best film at the highly acclaimed Portobello film festival 2012. Included in the ticket price is a copy of Cass’ award-winning DVD which tells the story of football casual culture.
Casuals Live promises be a night to remember and is already generating a huge buzz by both word of mouth and on social media sites. An event of this kind is long overdue and those that have seen what is in store are already chomping at the bit to be involved.

DRESSERS book trailer

Two years in the making, 3 nervous breakdowns, 25 personal accounts of featured events, over 200 full colour pages, 45 fashion pages, over 500 photographs, 75 designer labels, 25 scrapbook pages, 78 pairs of training shoes, 8000 shapes thrown on the dance floor and so much raving your Adidas Gazelles had holes in them.

Explosive, truthful, frank and entertaining, Dressers is the definitive social history of young working-class youth culture.  From the football terraces of the early 80s to the legendary raves and dance scene in the 90s, Dressers charts the route from Italian sportswear to baggy rave gear - all placed against the backdrop of a small steel-working town 10 miles outside Glasgow.

Chronicling the rise of one of Scotland’s original football casual groups, Dressers is a gripping insight into the mad Saturday afternoon fracas that exploded into town centres and football grounds all over Scotland and the subsequent evolution through fashion and the dance scene.

Accurate, funny, fashionable and sometimes dark, these exploits continue through to the 90’s when being arrested was beginning to lose its appeal.  Football casuals took a back seat as the rave and club culture exploded with the introduction of “that pill” right through to the new millennium.

With football fans having been long at the forefront of casual fashion, Dressers provides first hand recollections of the inspiration taken from figures as diverse as Bjorn Borg and Massimo Osti to Carl Cox and The Prodigy.

British style genius Jay Montessori said, “From a set of lads that could have been any of us living through that inspirational era, Dressers fuses the excellent observations of Phil Thornton’s ‘casuals’ book (from a Scottish point of view), with a fantastic pictorial and fashion section to rival our own ‘80s casuals’ bible.”

He continued “For me there have only been two books of note about this thing of ours.  I would consider ‘Dressers’ to be the third.”

Up to 30 years of first-hand accounts, memories and the most in-depth account charting football, fashion and the rave scene in Scotland, Dressers is a must read for football, music and fashion obsessives alike – enjoy!

Parklife 2012 - Last year in Platt Fields

Parklife Weekender confirms 2012 will be its last year at Platt Fields Park as the festival heads towards its third consecutive sold out event
Ambitions and appetite for the hugely successful festival outgrow its Fallowfield home
Parklife Weekender
Only 12 weeks are left until what is set to become Parklife Weekender’s third consecutive sold out festival, seeing revellers fillPlatt Fields Park in Manchester on 9th and 10th June. Promoters have now confirmed that 2012 will be the festival’s final year at its current location as plans for ever more impressive production and next-level line-ups supersede the potential of the current venue.

Those wishing to join The Flaming LipsDizzee Rascal and many more of the best pop, indie, electronic and crossover bands, DJs, producers and artists are strongly advised to purchase their tickets as soon as possible. In both its first and second years Parklife Weekender has sold out many weeks in advance, all indications point toward a repeat of this ferocious demand in 2012.

Parklife Weekender co-promoter Sam Kandel comments:

“Platt Fields provided a great start for The Parklife Weekender and we’ve been really grateful.

In 2010 when Parklife was just an idea, it was really an unknown as to whether it would work. If we had known only three years on we would be moving onto a new site to develop and grow the festival to meet demand – it would have saved many sleepless nights!

The park hosted our launch year and last summer’s expansion to a full weekend festival and will always hold fond memories from ourselves and our customers alike.

A new location is not yet confirmed but plans are in the pipeline. In the meantime we’re really looking forward to bidding farewell to Platt Fields in style.

Goodbye Platt Fields."
In addition to the spectacular talent and kaleidoscopic variety on offer at Parklife Weekender, tickets are quite possibly the best value for money offering across this summer’s festival season. At only £64.50 for a full weekend ticket Parklife Weekender offers a vastly more affordable option for cash-strapped festival-goers who are being charged up to £200 for other events.

·         Released as a double album in October 1981 to counter the slew of unofficial and bootleg releases which followed Ian Curtis’ death, “Still” first disc comprised studio out-takes and mainly unreleased or lesser heard tracks while the second album is a live recording of Joy Divisions’ last ever concert at High Hall, Birmingham on 2nd May 1980.

·         At the concert Hooky and The Light are to perform each disc separately, first the studio recording and then replicate the final ever Joy Division concert in a double header which has been long awaited and anticipated by fans and devotees of the band.

In the third of what has now become an annual event, Peter Hook And The Light are to complete their live performances of Joy Division’s releases, performing the double album “Still” for the first ever time, in full sequentially and in its entirely at The Factory, Manchester on Friday 18th May and Saturday 19th May 2012.
With The Light having already having performed Joy Division’s two full albums, “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer” since May 2010, “Still” marks a different challenge for the band and a new experience for the audience as the two disc album comprises some lesser known and previously unreleased material which featured on neither of the first two albums as well as a recording of Joy Division’s last ever concert at Birmingham High Hall on 2nd May 1980.
Originally released to provide an official album to counter the numerous bootleg and unofficial releases which followed Ian Curtis’ death, “Still’s” first disc material culled from a variety of sources, studio outtakes, the “Sordide Sentimental” limited edition French Single, and the band’s second John Peel session.
With Joy Division’s stunningly raw sound allied to the futuristic production template laid down by Martin Hannett, the other worldly, ethereal musings of “Exercise One” start up the album, which then opens up into many seminal and highly influential tracks including the thrashy “Ice Age”, the anthemically breaking “Glass”, the prophetically titled “Something Must Break”, a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Sister Ray” and the opening live track to many Joy Division concerts, “Dead Souls”.
Still’s second disc was formed of the live set from Joy Division’s last ever concert at Birmingham High Hall in May 1980. Notable for the first ever performance of “Ceremony”, the concert was just on the cusp of the release of second album “Closer” and the set list comes from both that album and from “Unknown Pleasures”.
Starting with the premiere of “Ceremony” which was to become New Order’s first ever single, the gig runs through many of the now classic live repertoire, the moody elegance of “Shadowplay” segues into “New Dawn Fades”, “Transmission”, Unknown Pleasures’ punchily direct opening track “Disorder” before completing the set with the rare live performances of “Decades” and “Digital”.
On completing the set of Joy Division’s releases with the Still Concerts, Peter Hook commented – “It’s somewhat bittersweet since I honestly wish there were more to go really but I am very happy that now with “Still” I will have played every Joy Division song ever written, again. I am delighted that The Light are performing Joy Division’s final release in what seems set to be the final Light / Joy Division gigs in Manchester and I’m looking forward to a couple of great concerts so finish up the trilogy properly.”
Support for both concerts comes from Kevin Hewick who will soon be releasing his “All Was Numbered” album on Hacienda Records.
On Mind & Forever Manchester Involvement
As has been customary with the previous album debut concerts at The Factory in May, the “Still” gigs benefit two charities, Mind, the mental health charity and Forever Manchester, a local Manchester charity which supports numerous community based initiatives
On the concerts continuing involvement with Mind, Chief Executive Paul Farmer said “Once again, we are indebted to Peter Hook for his continued support of Mind through these incredible gigs. For a third successive year, his efforts to raise vital funds and awareness will help us to continue to provide support and advice for anyone experiencing a mental health problem."
Forever Manchester’s Chief Executive Nick Massey also commented “It is fantastic that Hooky and The Light have involved us in these events. We will ensure that the money raised is put back into supporting the creativity, talent and passion found across Manchester, to improve the lives of all the people here.”

Forever Manchester’s Chief Executive Nick Massey also commented “It is fantastic that Hooky and The Light have involved us in these events. We will ensure that the money raised is put back into supporting the creativity, talent and passion found across Manchester, to improve the lives of all the people here.”
